Rebellen unter der Führung der islamistischen Gruppe Hayat Tahrir al-Sham haben die Kontrolle über die syrische Hauptstadt Damaskus übernommen. Damit ist das Ende der mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte andauernden Herrschaft Assads eingeläutet.

Der Sturz Assads bietet die Chance für einen Neubeginn nach Jahrzehnten Diktatur und fast 14 Jahren Bürgerkrieg mit Hunderttausenden Toten und Millionen Vertriebenen. Millionen Flüchtlinge haben die Hoffnung, wieder in die Heimat zurückkehren zu können.
