Gegen 06.30 Uhr am Samstagmorgen, dem jüdischen Feiertag Simchat Tora, starten nach Angaben der israelischen Armee Hunderte Hamas-Kämpfer einen Grossangriff auf Israel. Der Angriff, von der Hamas «Operation Al-Aqsa-Flut» genannt, beginnt einen Tag nach dem 50. Jahrestag des Beginns des Jom-Kippur-Krieges zwischen Israel und arabischen Staaten, der damals fast drei Wochen andauerte.

Während die radikalislamische Palästinenserorganisation vom Gazastreifen aus Tausende Raketen auf Ziele in Israel abfeuert, bahnen sich Hunderte ihrer Kämpfer am Boden mit Sprengstoff und Planierraupen den Weg durch die Sperranlage rund um den Küstenstreifen und dringen auf israelisches Gebiet vor. Bei ihrem Vormarsch nutzen die Angreifer Pick-ups, Motorräder, Schnellboote und motorisierte Gleitschirme.

Die eingesickerten Hamas-Kämpfer dringen in Kibbuze sowie Städte vor, töten Zivilisten auf der Strasse und in ihren Häusern und nehmen mindestens hundert Menschen als Geiseln. Bei einem Musikfestival in der Nähe des Kibbuz Reim werden rund 270 Menschen getötet. Insgesamt kommen beim Grossangriff mindestens 700 Menschen um und rund 2400 weitere werden verletzt.
