Wie ein Zürcher das Massaker der Hamas verschlief

ISRAEL, Magen - Dani Wyler, who has been raised in Zurich and moved to Israel in 1966, is seen in front of an Israeli flag at a lookout of Kibbutz Magen, whose security team managed to stop the influx of attacking Palestinian militants on October 7, 2023, near Gaza Strip in Southern Israel on Thursday, September 12, 2024. On Saturday, October 7, 2023, Palestinian militant groups led by Hamas launched a large-scale offensive against Israel from the Gaza Strip, breaking through the Gaza–Israel barrier and forcing entry into Gaza border crossings, nearby Israeli towns, adjacent military installations, and civilian settlements. Hostilities were initiated in the early morning with a rocket barrage against Israel and vehicle-transported incursions into Israeli territory. The Palestinian groups dubbed their assault Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, while Israel announced a counteroffensive by the name Operation Iron Swords and formally declared war. Israeli authorities reported that 1170 people were killed in the initial attack and more than 3300 were injured. Palestinian authorities in Gaza reported that since October 7 at least 41.252 have been killed and more than 95.497 injured, with more than 10.000 missing. During the same period, at least 705 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli army or by Israeli settlers in the Occupied West Bank, in addition to 243 Palestinians which had been killed from January until the beginning of October 2023. The Palestinian groups from Gaza reportedly abducted 255 people, including soldiers, elderly, women and children, from Israel and transferred them to the Gaza Strip. To date, 109 hostages, including 24 foreign nationals, have been released by Hamas via Egypt. One Israeli soldier and seven Israeli civilians, who had been abducted to Gaza Strip, have been freed by the Israeli Defense Forces in four separate instances. The remains of 37 abductees, who have been killed in Gaza Strip or whose bodies were kept in Gaza Strip, were brought back to Israel by the IDF. At least three Israeli abductees have been killed by the IDF inside Gaza Strip, with several more expected. To date, 346 Israeli soldiers, one police officer and one civilian Defense Ministry contractor have been killed during or in connection with the ground offensive in the Gaza Strip.
